City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Series: The Mortal Instruments (1)

Kindle Edition, April 14 2009, 485 pages
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon US

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

My thoughts

I originally gave this book 1 star as I couldn't seem to get through the first few chapters. But after seeing it receive 4 and 5 star reviews I am reconsidering my harsh judgement of this book and I'm going to see it through to the end this time, even if it kills me.
Wish me luck!!
Having another go...
Okay so second time round I'm thinking maybe I was a little harsh! It was definitely worth more than one star. I'm still not seeing the five star quality that some people have given but I will admit it had some good parts. The first few chapters kept jumping between characters without warning and I didn't know if I was coming or going. Eventually I got into the book and it was really quite entertaining and there was definitely a few shockers in there. I wasn't happy with how the story ended but that was just because of what I wanted, nothing to do with how it was written. Anyway I will be reading the next in the series and see how it goes from there. :D
